Writer's Craft (EWC4U)

This course focuses on refining media arts skills through the creation of a thematic body of work using a combination of traditional and emerging technologies. Students will explore techniques including multimedia, computer animation, installation art, and performance art. They will craft pieces that express their views on contemporary issues, ultimately building portfolios suitable for career or postsecondary education applications. The curriculum also delves into a critical examination of how media artists influence audience perceptions of identity, culture, and community values.

Program

Unit One: Short Stories (35 Hours)

In this unit, students will immerse themselves in a diverse selection of short stories, providing them with an opportunity to interact with a wide array of texts. This experience encourages exploration, discussion, and the enhancement of writing skills. The curriculum centers on P.A.C.T.S (Predict, Ask, Connect, Translate, Summarize), critical analysis, research, in-depth exploration of themes, and the incorporation of supporting evidence. Students will revisit rhetorical devices and receive guidance on more advanced literary techniques. The culmination of this unit involves creating an analysis of rhetorical devices employed in the stories.

Unit Two: Short Non-Fiction & Personal Response (20 Hours)

In this unit, students will interact with a wide variety of nonfiction essays, editorials, and documentaries through reading and viewing. The curriculum introduces various methods of development, and students will actively recognize and analyze the techniques used in crafting these nonfiction works.

Unit Three: Novel Study: The Kite Runner (25 Hours)

In this unit, students explore "The Kite Runner," focusing on the novel's historical context through interactive lessons and activities. The curriculum covers theme analysis, character study, presentation skills, and class discussions. Assessment emphasizes observational and communication skills. Students will also craft a literary essay, honing their ability to build a strong thesis, use varied sentence structures, and conduct thorough analysis. Effective use of transitional words to improve writing flow is also a key focus. Personalized feedback from the teacher will support students throughout this process.

Drama: Hamlet 25 Hours)

In this unit, students will engage with Shakespeare's masterpiece, "Hamlet." The course includes an overview of Shakespeare's life, the Elizabethan period, and the distinctive language used in Shakespeare's works. The curriculum is enriched with interactive exercises aimed at deepening understanding of the play’s key themes, character development techniques, and the incorporation of supernatural elements.

Exam/RST (8 Hours)

This final task, accounting for 10% of the course grade, acts as a comprehensive assessment for the course. It integrates various concepts and skills learned throughout the course and assesses students' ability to showcase their comprehension. The evaluation criteria include not just the end result but also the student's skill in expressing their understanding through discussion and observational insights.

Final Exam (2 Hours)

Final Exam: 20%

This supervised examination forms 20% of the overall course grade.

  • A laptop or desktop computer, ideally equipped with Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsers.
  • Means for video recording and scanning of handwritten documents (such as a smartphone, tablet, iPad, or webcam).
  • A reliable internet connection.
  • Adobe software.
