Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OLC4O)

This course is designed to help students develop and demonstrate the literacy skills evaluated in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). By successfully completing this course, students fulfill the literacy criteria required for graduation in Ontario. The course encompasses engagement with a wide array of texts, including informational, narrative, and graphic types. Students will enhance their writing abilities by composing various forms of texts such as summaries, informational paragraphs, opinions, and news reports. Additionally, they will create and maintain a portfolio that records their reading journey and displays examples of their writing achievements.

Unit 1: Literacy and Grammar (20 Hours)

This unit takes students on an exploration of the vital role of literacy in everyday life. It aims to deepen their understanding of the reading and writing processes, building a solid base of knowledge. The course also revisits essential grammar principles, setting the stage for deeper understanding in later units. Students will begin their learning journal and portfolio at this point, marking the start of their educational journey.

Unit 2: Informational and Graphic Texts (20Hours)

In this segment of the course, students will delve into the intricate world of informational and graphic texts. Through a variety of activities, they will learn how to effectively read, understand, and produce their own informational and graphic materials. The focus of this unit is to improve their proficiency in both interpreting and constructing different types of text-based information.

Unit 3: Summaries, Narrative Texts and Grammar (20 Hours)

In this section of the course, students will focus on strengthening their grasp of essential grammar concepts. This knowledge will serve as a solid foundation for their ability to craft succinct summaries and engaging narrative texts. We will place particular emphasis on the art of summarization across various text types. Additionally, students will acquire effective strategies to enhance their understanding of narrative texts, empowering them to create their narratives with confidence.

Unit 4: News Writing, Opinion Essays and Grammar (25 Hours)

In this unit, students will embark on an exploration of news writing, opinion essay composition, and the nuances of grammar. The curriculum will provide them with the tools to create compelling news leads and well-structured opinion essays. An essential comprehension of grammar principles, thoughtfully tailored to enhance proficiency in these specific writing styles, will be a fundamental aspect of this educational journey.

Unit 5: Oral Literacy (20 Hours)

In this unit, students will uncover the significance of vocabulary, fluency, and articulation in the realm of effective communication. Furthermore, they will delve into the concept of inclusive and mindful language usage, gaining insights into its role in communication. Essential techniques will be imparted to elevate their speaking abilities, fostering both effectiveness and fairness in their communication style.

Rich Summative Task (5 hours)

Worth 30% of the final evaluation:

Students will engage in a thorough evaluation, encompassing the content studied throughout the course. Furthermore, an oral metacognitive element will be integrated, affording students the chance to introspect and articulate their comprehension of the learning journey.
