Unit One: Literacy and Grammar (20 Hours)

This first module immerses students in the world of literacy, highlighting its importance in everyday contexts. They will explore the basics of reading and writing, along with introductory grammar concepts, setting a solid foundation for subsequent learning. Additionally, this module is where students will start maintaining their learning journal, a critical tool for their educational development.

Unit Two: Informational and Graphic Texts (20 Hours)

In this second module, students get familiarized with informational and graphic texts. They will engage in a range of activities designed to enhance their skills in reading, comprehending, and producing their own informational and graphic materials.

Unit Three: Literary Texts, Narrative Texts and Summaries (20 Hours)

This unit immerses students in various literary texts, aiming to refine their reading and comprehension abilities. Alongside, they will explore advanced grammar concepts, crucial for crafting effective summaries and narrative texts. The emphasis lies on mastering the art of summarizing any text and developing skills in writing engaging narrative pieces.

Unit Four: News Writing and Opinion Essays (25 Hours)

This unit focuses on the intricacies of news writing and the crafting of opinion essays. Students will develop their abilities to construct engaging news leads and well-argued opinion essays, using grammar concepts that are vital for these styles of writing. Additionally, they will engage in critical analysis of news and opinion pieces, further enriching their understanding and skills.

Unit Five: Oral Literacy (20 Hours)

In this unit, students will focus on essential elements of oral literacy, including vocabulary enhancement, fluency, and diction. They will also learn about the importance of using politically correct language. The unit aims to equip students with vital techniques to improve their overall communication abilities.

Rich Summative Task (5 Hours)

The Reflective Summative Task (RST) accounts for 30% of the final grade:

This task involves a comprehensive assessment, encompassing the material learned during the entire course, and includes an oral reflection component to demonstrate metacognitive understanding.

  • A laptop or personal computer, ideally equipped with web browsers like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
  • Facilities for video recording and scanning handwritten work, such as a mobile phone, tablet, iPad, or webcam.
  • A reliable internet connection.
