This course is designed to improve students' skills in oral communication, reading, writing, and understanding media. Students will engage in critical analysis of literary works from different eras, interpret and assess various informational and graphical texts, and produce a variety of oral, written, and media texts. A key component is the use of effective communication strategies to increase proficiency. The primary objective is to prepare students for academic success in secondary school and everyday life, especially gearing them up for the compulsory Grade 11 course aimed at university or college preparation.

Program

Unit One: Short Stories (20 Hours)

This unit presents an array of short stories, encouraging students to dive into diverse narratives for enriched discussions and writing exercises. Key focus areas include P.A.C.T.S and step-by-step activities that lay the foundation for advanced essay writing skills. Students will learn to employ a structured response approach, integrating evidence in their writing, and engaging in detailed text analysis. The introduction to rhetorical techniques is a crucial part of this unit, culminating in a media project that demonstrates their understanding.

Moreover, students will engage with an online drawing platform to create digital artwork. This is supplemented by studying modern artists who primarily use drawing, enriching students' artistic experiences and expressions.

Unit Two: Novel: The Field Guide to the North American Teenager (25 Hours)

In this unit, students will delve into "The Field Guide to the North American Teenager," engaging with the text through detailed comprehension queries. They will also create character profile scrapbooks, exploring the depth and complexity of the characters in the novel. Active involvement in online discussion forums is a key component, where students will dissect and discuss various aspects of the novel, including its information, ideas, issues, and themes. This analysis will also include an examination of how different elements of the text contribute to the narrative and character development.

Unit Three: Poetry (15 Hours)

This unit guides students through the diverse world of poetry, equipping them with the skills needed to craft their own poetic pieces. Students will also explore the subtleties of soliloquies, differentiating them from monologues, with a particular focus on Shakespeare's "Hamlet." The unit culminates in enhancing students' abilities to critically analyze poetry, focusing on in-depth examination and interpretation of various poetic forms and styles.

Unit Four: Media Studies (25 Hours)

This unit takes a deep dive into communication dynamics through the lens of "The Hate U Give." Students will explore different facets of communication and enhance their critical reading skills, actively contributing to discussion forums. The course progresses into the field of radio broadcasting, guiding students from basic podcast creation to advanced radio scriptwriting, enabling them to develop their own scripts. Opinion writing forms another crucial part of the curriculum, where students learn to effectively convey their viewpoints in opinion essays. Additionally, the unit introduces students to film analysis, sharpening their skills in writing comprehensive and perceptive film reviews.

Unit Five: Novel: Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism and You (25 hours)

In this unit, students will explore the history and impact of racism using "Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You" as a guide. The module focuses on themes and ideas crucial to understanding today's socio-political landscape. Students are urged to think deeply and critically, analyzing the book's key concepts and drawing meaningful connections. This approach aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of a complex and significant issue in modern society.

RST and Final Exam 30% (10 Hours)

The summative task of this course, accounting for 30% of the final grade, is designed as an all-encompassing assessment. It integrates and tests the various concepts and skills emphasized during the program. The aim is to gauge students' mastery and comprehension of the course material. This assessment will involve a thorough evaluation of the final output, supplemented by active participation in discussions and observational analysis, all forming crucial aspects of the evaluation process.

  • A laptop or desktop computer, ideally with internet browsers such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
  • Devices capable of video recording and scanning handwritten documents, like smartphones, tablets, iPads, or webcams.
  • Consistent and reliable internet connectivity.
  • The novel "Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You" by Jason Reynolds.
