The focus of this course is on applying social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to explore and explain changes in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, as well as their impact on society. Students will engage in critical thinking to dissect the underlying causes of cultural, social, and behavioral shifts throughout history. They will draw on theories from renowned social scientists to examine the roots and reactions to various societal challenges, including technological advancements, deviant behaviors, and global disparities. Furthermore, the course emphasizes the practical application of social science research methods in studying the nuances and mechanics of social change.

Unit One: Challenge of Change (10 Hours)

In this unit, students will acquire the skills necessary to elucidate the fundamental processes inherent in social science research, with a specific focus on its relevance in the study of societal transformation. The unit emphasizes the development of a deep comprehension of the central role played by the examination of change in modern social sciences. Moreover, students will gain practical experience in applying this knowledge by mastering the creation of a comprehensive research plan. This plan will serve as a structured guide for investigating a particular subject connected to social change, facilitating the development of both theoretical insight and practical research competencies.

Unit Two: The Challenge of Change at Home: Factors that Shape an Individual (20Hours)

In this unit, students will further develop their research and inquiry skills by exploring the unique challenges individuals encounter within their domestic environments. Special emphasis will be placed on distinguishing primary and secondary sources of information. Additionally, students will investigate the influential factors that shape an individual's behavior from early stages of socialization through adolescence. The primary goal of this unit is to foster an understanding of the ever-changing dynamics within individuals and how these transformations impact the broader values and attitudes of society.

Unit Three: Social Justice and Inequality: Changes (20 Hours)

In this unit, students will further develop their research and investigative abilities with a focus on recording and organizing information for social science research. Additionally, they will learn how to actively participate in and make meaningful contributions to their school and community. The examination of contemporary trends in Canadian society will be approached from various theoretical perspectives.

Unit Four: Social Justice and Inequality: Challenges (20Hours)

In this unit, students will acquire the capacity to articulate the influence of behavior and the development of concepts within the Canadian context. They will also delve into the enhancement of research and inquiry skills, with a specific emphasis on recording and structuring information vital for social science research. Furthermore, students will cultivate an appreciation for actively engaging and participating in their school and community. This comprehensive approach is designed to empower students with a holistic understanding of societal dynamics while nurturing practical research and engagement abilities.

Unit Five: Science and Technology: Challenge and Change (15 Hours)

In this unit, students will acquire knowledge of the underlying factors driving social change, with a particular focus on understanding the significant technological forces behind these transformations. The unit will delve into the specific ways in which these technological influences affect Canadian teenagers. Students will develop the capacity to elucidate the societal repercussions of technological shifts and comprehend their impact on Canadians. Additionally, students will refine their research and inquiry skills, enabling them to interpret, synthesize, and analyze research findings, with practical applications to their independent investigations. Furthermore, the unit will provide students with the skills needed to utilize social media for advocating issues or causes they are passionate about.

Unit Six - Global Challenge and Change (15 Hours)

In this unit, students will embark on a comprehensive exploration of cultural, economic, and political globalization, aiming to grasp how these transformations resonate within Canada. The central focus will be on articulating the essence of social change, understanding the associated challenges, and discerning their ramifications for both Canadians and global citizens. Key topics such as multinational corporations, human rights, and global cultural trends will be thoroughly examined, with a strong emphasis on comprehending the interpretations of global social changes by influential social theorists. Students will continue to refine their research and inquiry skills, empowering them to effectively communicate the outcomes of their social science research. This concluding evaluation, administered at the end of the course, serves as a comprehensive assessment that consolidates multiple expectations addressed throughout the program. Its purpose is to assess a student's proficiency in demonstrating understanding not only through the final product but also through conversation and observation, providing a well-rounded measure of their mastery of the course content.
